Japan and Taiwan

Day 3

The highlight of the day was the world famous Tsukiji fish market. This is where the best sushi restaurants get their fish. If there is one word that describes that place it is mayhem. Trucks, dollys, scooters zipping around the place barely dodging the relentless horde of tourists.

I stopped into Ryu Sushi which, if I remember correctly, has been open since 1939. I ordered a sashimi set there and boy it was amazing. Eating the fish right next to where they were selling it was quite the experience. One way you can tell a sushi place is legit is if they are grating it from a real wasabi root. I can’t remember the last time I had that – the green stuff you normally get at restaurants is just regular horseradish. Just seeing that alone at Ryu, I knew I was in for a treat.

I then stopped by the Meiji Shrine which, unfortunately, was mostly under construction for renovations.

I also stopped by the Tokyo Tower The upper observation deck here was also under construction. It was still pretty neat though and it really reminded me of the Seattle Space Needle.

I ended the day with a delicious meal of Japanese curry followed by a stop to Roppongi to check out Brewdog Roppongi – originally a Scottish brewery.

Today is my last half day in Tokyo and then it’s off to Taiwan I go.

 Stay tuned.
